I stole this from Memphis Steve who stole it from someone else. I like it because I think it shows what I hear alot: "Where are from? You arent from here." People are usually surprised to find out that I'm a true Southerner and have lived here all my life.

People from 'round hearabouts don't think I'm local, but my Aunties (pronounced Onties) in New England can tell I'm from South of the Mason Dixon line...

That's what I find funny because most of the people who ask me that aren't from the south. I think they expect all Southeners to have a stronger accent. I have one but it's not strong.
No they expect us to all sound like Gomer Pyle. People forget there are 3 distinct accents found in the deep south.
1. Southern - the true southern accent - soft r's and i's
2. Country - a bit more of a twang and nasal toning
3. Hick - The white version of ebonics. I certainly don't understand it.
And the last two can be found almost everywhere in the USA in rural areas.
That's my story and I'm stickin with it. :-)
Don't forget Southern Belle. I rarely hear it but it does pop up from time to time.
I was in Birmingham and had an old lady in an elevator hit me with the old "you ain't from 'round here, air ye?"
I said, "no ma'am, I'm from Huntsville, way up north of here about an hour's drive." I guess that makes me a yankee?
